The province of Ontario in central Canada is massively popular with British immigrants and the sheer number of foreigners moving in is having a drastic effect on population numbers. TheMoveChannel.com takes a look at why Ontario has such appeal… Canada has long been topping the charts of the hot emigration destinations for Brits wanting to start a new life. Drawn by an outdoorsy lifestyle, wide open spaces, friendly people and proximity to America; Brits have been flocking to Canada for years. So, with the whole country to choose from, why is Ontario such an eternally popular spot? Well, I’ll tell you. Ease of access plays a major part in making or breaking a destination and, as Ontario is only a seven hour flight from the UK that definitely works in its favour. Everyone likes to feel wanted and Canada’s provincial and national Government have been busy actively encouraging the arrival of foreign nationals for years. The Government even went so far as to arrange Local Immigration Partnerships, which help local communities to encourage and adjust to international immigrants in their midst. Ontario can already lay claim to being the country’s most populous province, home to a third of Canada’s population. Boasting excellent employment and lifestyle opportunities, plus an eclectic mix of cultural pursuits and stunning natural scenery, Ontario has a lot of factors working in its favour. Ontario can also lay claim to four of the five Great Lakes, plus six national parks and hiking, fishing, camping and skiing are all popular pastimes. There are parks around the Great Lakes for summer activities and winter pursuits such as fishing, camping, snowmobiling and ice fishing also on offer. Famous Niagara Falls and the CN Tower, which is one of the world’s tallest buildings, also pull in hoard of tourists each year. Whilst Brits spend much of their time complaining about the weather, many of them do like their four distinct seasons. Ontario offers proper hot, humid summers and freezing winters – temperatures can fall as low as minus 26C in the dead of winter. There is also easy access to America from Ontario and thus the manufacturing industry in the province is the largest and most profitable. Based mainly in the Golden Horseshoe region, the largest industrialised area in Canada, Ontario’s manufacturing industry relies heavily on the production of motor vehicles and machinery, with a large number of the population employed within the car industry. Capital growth So, if Ontario is a Canadian centerpiece, lets take a look at Ontario’s centrepiece, Toronto. The capital city is central to Canada’s economy as it is home to the countrys financial services and banking and IT industry. It is also a hub for Canada’s booming tourist industry, on which millions is spent on marketing campaigns each year. Last year saw a marketing spend of more than £17 million. Toronto is also packed with world-class cultural entertainment, including theatre, sporting opportunities, museums, galleries and shops, plus heritage buildings and a wide range of bars and restaurants. The far north and west of Ontario are pure wilderness and you can even expect to see black bears roaming in their natural habitat. So watch out!
